Meet Ezra
Five-year-old Ezra lives in Kirkcaldy with his parents, big sister and little brother. The family attends The Yard Fife every weekend. Ezra loves imaginative play and playing with other children and playworkers. His Dad, Euan, sees The Yard as the place where Ezra is where Ezra is most himself.
Ezra’s First Time at The Yard
Ezra first started coming to The Yard in 2024. His dad, Euan, remembers their very first visit as a moment of “excited bewilderment.”
“Ezra wasn’t quite sure what to do,” Euan recalls. “He was excited to be there and to see all this stuff, but it was almost like he couldn’t comprehend what he could actually do.”
Like many children, Ezra experiences anxiety in new environments. For Euan, that anxiety was often compounded by his own worry about how others might react if Ezra became overwhelmed or had a meltdown – something the family had experienced in other public spaces.
Fortunately, The Yard’s Family Worker was there to support them from the outset. She helped the family settle in and guided them around the space, taking the time to speak directly to Ezra in a way he could understand.
“She wasn’t just explaining it to us as his parents,” Euan says, “she was explaining it to Ezra as well, on his level.”
A Place Where Ezra Is Most Himself
“The Yard is where he’s most himself,” Euan explains with a smile. “He goes crazy! He runs around and he plays with everybody and anybody. He’s made a few friends, but even if they’re not there, he’ll always find someone to play with.”
This growing confidence hasn’t stayed at The Yard. It has carried over into other parts of Ezra’s life, with him now attending both the Boys’ Brigade and Highland dancing classes – opportunities that would once have felt overwhelming.
The Yard is also a vital outlet for Ezra’s creativity. Here, he can use his imagination freely and explore play in ways that suit him. As Euan explains, he’s able to “be imaginative and doesn’t just have to sit there and put trains on a track.”
Ezra has grown increasingly confident in advocating for himself too, clearly communicating what he needs from the play team to bring his ideas to life. Euan fondly remembers one moment, when a Play Worker helped Ezra create a full space suit from cardboard and glue.
“You couldn’t even see him! He didn’t want to take it off because he was loving it.”
A Place for Ezra’s Parents
Ezra and his siblings are home educated by mum, Alisia. By the time the weekend arrives, Alisia really values having some time to herself. Weekend sessions at The Yard provide that opportunity, as dad Euan loves spending time at The Yard almost as much as the children do.
For Euan, these sessions also offer something equally important: respite and connection. They give him the chance to sit down with a cup of coffee, chat with other parents, and build a supportive network with families who understand their experiences.
Beyond play sessions, The Yard has provided invaluable support during key moments. By observing how the play team interact with Ezra, his parents have gained a deeper understanding of how he communicates through his behaviour. As a result, they’re now experiencing far fewer meltdowns at home.
The Family Worker has also offered practical support, helping the family complete forms for Ezra’s autism assessment and supporting them with a successful application for a Blue Badge due to Risk in Traffic.
The Blue Badge has been life-changing. It has increased Alisia’s confidence in taking the children out during the week — something that previously felt very difficult due to Ezra’s lack of road safety awareness.
What The Yard means to the Family
Reflecting on their journey, Euan sums up what The Yard means to them:
“It really has helped us grow as a family. Seeing how Ezra was before The Yard compared to how he is now — the growth, the confidence, the change in him — has been phenomenal. My wife and I can also see new ways to support him at home. It has changed our family life for the better, in ways that words couldn’t explain. It’s central to our life.
